Master of Emergency Management Pathway Programme of Master of Emergency Management, offered at GISM, Sri Lanka (Massey University 0.5+1 and 1+1 Pathways)

Emergency Management is the managerial task cooperated with creating the framework within which communities diminish vulnerability to hazards and survive with disasters. This course program will provide students with required knowledge and training to respond to all types of risks/disasters that would occur in a community, and emphases on the implementation of practical methods to reduce the effects of natural or man-made emergency situations.

Emergency Management master degree also focuses to educate and train professionals in the field who can appropriately organise populations for a disaster before it occurs. Students will learn information that is related to emergency response methods and effective ways of repairing after the disaster. Further, this provides the knowledge to analyses factors and strategies that play a crucial role in an emergency, to make long-term decision-making, policy implementation and thorough with critical thinking skills.

Through this pathway programme, you can study one year in Sri Lanka and complete the subsequent year at Massey University in New Zealand. On successfully completion, Massey University offers the Master of Emergency Management Degree.

Entry Requirements

To enter the Master of Emergency you have been awarded or qualified with:

  • Bachelor’s degree from a recognized University in the field of Biological Science, Agriculture, food science, Nursing, Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) or similar field with a minimum B grade average OR
  • Equivalent Bachelors-Level qualification with experience accepted by the GISM faculty board of the Faculty of Science AND
  • Selection will be on the basis of an interview.

Duration: Six months Full time / One-year Part time

0.5 + 1 PATHWAY: ONE SEMESTER AT GISM

Students who participate in the 0.5+1 pathway programme will undertake a 1.5-year programme of study in which the first intake will be taught at GISM and the remaining 1 year will be taught at Massey.

GISM Students must pass all courses listed above with a B grade average to enter the Massey Master of Emergency Management coursework pathway. For GISM students who successfully achieve the entrance requirements, Massey will recognize 60 credits of prior learning towards the 180-credit Massey Master of Emergency Management as follows:

To enter the Massey Master of Emergency Management research pathway with Thesis, GISM Students must pass the two GISM courses with a B+ grade average.  For GISM Students successfully achieving this requirement, Massey will recognise 60 credits of prior learning in the GISM Programme towards the 180 credit Massey Master of Emergency Management.
